That Empty Feeling

January 8, 2026 Van Burch

MATTHEW 5:6 (NKJV)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Back in the day, I played basketball for the legendary Coach Johnny Goston at Pershing High School. I liked playing, but I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. During the summer me and my brothers would take to any basketball court we could find – indoor or outdoor – didn’t matter. We loved the game. After a long day of playing, I would develop a thirst. I tried drinking sport drinks like some. I even tried pop! But they always left me feeling empty and still thirsty. My body needed water to be fulfilled.

We often search for people or things to fulfill us. Even after we get the job we want, the car we dreamed of, or even the social status we aimed for, that empty feeling is still evident. What our bodies desire is Living Water – the Word of God. God’s Word tells us how to achieve righteousness. Righteousness is God’s way of doing things. It’s seeking to serve people. It’s praying for others. It’s forgiving those who’ve wronged us. It’s living a life pleasing to Christ. That’s when that empty feeling goes away because we realize it’s not how much we have, but how much we give. That’s when you become truly fulfilled.

Is it in you?

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your example of righteousness in Your Word. When I live for You, I know I will be fulfilled. I will seek ways to serve others as You did. I will lift Your people in prayer. I will forgive my brothers and sisters for their sin as You have forgiven mine. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
